The Arley Estate and Arboretum is owned by the R.D. Turner
Charitable Trust.
Mr. Roger D. Turner was from a well known family of Midland industrialists
and he founded the Trust in 1971. This Trust was created for general
charitable purposes with the emphasis being on those charities operating
in the Midlands.
When Mr. Turner died in 1999, he left his entire Estate, which
included Arley Estate, to his Charitable Trust. The Arley Estate
comprises most of the village of Upper Arley including the Post
Office and Public House, many outlying properties, farms, smallholdings,
and Eymore Wood, together with some 3 miles of the River Severn,
the whole extending to over 1600 acres.
The
Trustees decided that the Arboretum was of sufficient importance
for it to be extended and opened to the public: a principal aim
being to provide education for all age groups.
The arboretum is being managed and developed by an experienced
and dedicated team led by Head Gardener Michael Darvill.
