Arley Arboretum is one of the oldest Arboretums in Great Britain.
Tucked away in the beautiful countryside of the Worcestershire and
Shropshire borders near Bewdley, it boasts more than 300 species
of trees in formal and informal plantings and gardens. The collection
includes many rare and spectacular domestic and exotic trees. Nestling
in the Severn Valley and overlooking the river, it has been growing
and maturing in this idyllic setting for two centuries.
The arboretum has been open to the public since 2002.
Winter in the arboretum is a time of stark beauty. With many of the leaves
gone, the architectural strength and power of the trees are revealed.
Their branches and bark form a wonderful range of colours and textures,
and last season's leaves are reclaimed and recycled beneath them. Meanwhile,
the wide range of evergreen trees provide cover and shelter through rain,
wind and snow. Whilst the trees and their many residents await spring,
the arboretum staff are busy with essential care and maintenance.
